This information is aimed at Faculty of Science staff using Windows 7 and drive U:, the UU personal storage facility.

In general

Drive U: is the personal network storage provide by UU. Every staff member has access to this storage facility, although it may not always be visible.

Because there is a price tag to this storage, staff members of the Faculty of Science are encouraged to store data on drive S:, a comparable facility.

Staff members with large data collections on drive U: are contacted by ICT-Bèta to move data to drive S:

This page offers instructions to assess your data usage and to move your data from U: to S:. You may also find (links to) manuals and tips on data usage.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Below you will find answers to common questions. Actual actions are not described in detail, but where applicable we will refer to a comprehensive manual with images (PDF).

What is the difference between drive U: and drive S:?

Drive U: is a personal storage facility provided by ITS (the UU IT organization). Every UU staff member has access to drive U:. On UU workstations, drive U: is readily available by default.

Drive S: is a personal storage facility provided by ICT-Bèta. Every Faculty of Science staff member has access to drive S:. On UU workstations drive S: is usually readily available.

Why would I move my data from drive U: to drive S:?

Default capacity on drive U: is limited to 4GB (fair use). This can be expanded on request, but costs may be incurred. ICT-Bèta has decided that data storage over 10GB should be on faculty systems such as drive S:.

How do I know whether to use drive U: or drive S:?

You should use drive U: only for work-related data. As long as usage stays below 4GB, there is no probleme using drive U:. If you have to store large data files (e.g. data sets, video material, detailed photographs etc.) on a regular basis, you should consider using drive S:. If you have a permanent need for 10GB or more of storage space, you should use drive S: or another faculty alternative.

Where can I find how much space I have on drive U:?

Open a Windows Explorer.
Right-click drive U: ans select Properties.

For address, use \\soliscom.uu.nl\science\users\<solis-id> and replace solisid with your own Solis-id.

I don't have drive S: on my workstation…

Standard Windows workstations should have drive S: available by default, but this setting may be upset. You make the connection yourself.
Open a Windows Explorer.

For address, use \\soliscom.uu.nl\science\users\<solis-id> and replace solisid with your own Solis-id.

How much space do I get on drive S:?

Default storage capacity is:

staff 15GB
students 4GB
guests 5GB

You can ask for more storage space through the ITS Selfservicedesk.
You should mention 'extending personal storage (Bètawetenschappen S-schijf)'.

Are there other alternatives to drive U:?

If you want to store data files that can be accessible to selected others (e.g. research group members) you might want to use Project space or shared space on drive O:
Project space can be used in conjunction with drive S:.
Science project space is not available automatically; see the pages linked above for additional information.
