Printer installation on Mac OS X

This page describes the installation of a printer on Mac OS X 10.5 or higher. Installation on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) differs and is described separately.

Before you start

During the installation process, you will need to enter the correct print server. The server depends on printer make. Below you will find the correct server for each printer make:

printer type	printserver
HP	ictsc-w-s187.soliscom.uu.nl
Overig/other	its-w-s369.soliscom.uu.nl

you will also need the printer's UU serial number. You can find this on the label attached to each printer. If this label is missing, please contact the ITS Selfservicedesk.

Finally, you will need the correct printer drivers. If these are not available on your system, you will need to download them from the printer manufacturer web site.

Mac OS X 10.5 or higher

Please note: for Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) you will need a different procedure;see below.

1. Open System Preferences.
2. Click Print & Fax.
3. Click the '+' sign to add a printer.
4. For the next step, you will need the Advanced button; if this button doesn't show. follow these steps:
   1. Right-click (or Control-Left-click) the toolbar.
   2. Select Customize toolbar...
   3. Drag the Advanced button to the toolbar.
   4. Click Done.
5. Click the Advanced button and enter the following information:
   1. Type: Windows
   2. Device: Another Device (default)
   3. URL: depending on the printer make:
      the general format is smb://<printserver>/<UU-serial-number>
      e.g. smb://ictsc-w-s033.soliscom.uu.nl/UU017033
   4. Name: any name to your liking.
   5. Print using: select the correct driver.
6. Click Add.
7. You will get a printer options screen. Default options usually suffice. Click Continue to finish the installation.

At first, a print job will not be executed, because you are not authorized.

1. Click Resume in the printer dialog.
2. When asked, enter your Solis-id and password; for your Solis-id, use the format soliscom\solisd
3. Select Remember this password in my keychain to ensure authorization for future print jobs.
4. Click OK to execute the print job.

Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)

5. Click the Advanced button and select the following options: (screenshot)
   1. Type: Windows printer via spoolss
   2. Device: Another Device (default)
   3. URL: the general format is smb://print.science.uu.nl/<SC-nummer>
      bijvoorbeeld smb://print.science.uu.nl/SC024
      A list of all printer-codes cannot be obtained in OSX, use a Windows station and enter \\print.science.uu.nl in the finder, the detail view shows the short printer name under the NAME column
   4. Name: give your own ID, ie. SC024
   5. Print using: Generic postscript printer or download the appropriate driver.
6. Click Add.
7. A list of option is shown. In cas of generic driver only the duplex unit option is displayed. Click Continue to complete the installation.

The first print-request will evoke a login screen. Use your Solis-id en -password.

1. Select option Remember this password in my keychain, for future authorisation.
2. Click OK to complete.
