Contrary to earlier information, public desktops within the Faculty of Science will continue to be managed by {{ictuu|en}}.  Public desktops are desktops that 'public' places: study landscapes, computer rooms, teacher PC's in lecture rooms, etc.  On these compueters, Windows XP will be replaced by Windows 7 (64bit).

__TOC__
==Introducing Windows 7 on public desktops==
As of 1 September 2013, all public desktops will be fitted out with Windows 7 (64 bit), replacing Windows XP.

This may have consequences for the software you are using in your courses.  It is not possible to run 16 bit applications on a 64 bit operating system.  Such applications will no longer be available on public desktops.

Furthermore, {{ictuu|en|nolink}} is currently implementing the project Application Rationalization.  Its goal is to reduce the total number of applications, e.g. in cases where several applications serve the same purpose.
This may also affect the applications you use for your courses.

==Software available on Faculty of Science public desktops==
The '''[[media:Applicatieaanbod_Publieke_werkplekken_-_Betawetenschappen_2013.pdf|list of software available on Science public desktops]]''' (PDF) shows which software packages are available, and in which version.

==Are you missing an application?==
If an application is missing from the above list that you do need, then check the '''[[media:Applicatieaanbod_Publieke_werkplekken_-_UU-breed_2013.pdf|list of software  available on UU public desktops]]''' (PDF).  (As an aide, software that is already available on Science public desktops is shown <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: #00f">bold italic blue</span> in the list.)

Software packages on this list that are not available on Science desktops, may me made available.  Send a request for this as soon as possible (but no later than 17 May 2013) to {{ictbeta|en|nolink}}: {{ictbetamail}}

If the required application is not on the UU list, but is absolutely required for your courses, please contact us as soon as possible (but no later than 17 May 2013): ({{ictbetamail}}).  Installation of the software must be considered; in installation is not possible on technical grounds, an alternative must be found.

==Are you the ''key user'' for an application?==
If the list contains applications for which you are the key user, would you please let us know?  Key users are important when it comes to updating software.

==Installation and testing of software==
From 1 June on, there will be test desktops in the study landscapes Buys Ballot and David de Wied.  Software will become available gradually on these systems; not all packages will be available initially.  On 1 July at the latest all applications will be available.

You are encouraged to use these test machines and at least try the software that is important to your courses.  If you have problems with software, please notify {{ictbeta|en|nolink}} immediately: {{ictbetamail}}.
